Senate Republicans Continue to Play Irresponsible Games With Minnesota’s Election Security
Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party Chairman Ken Martin released the following statement in response to the Senate GOP’s refusal to properly fund Minnesota’s election protection.
“What an irresponsible move by Minnesota Senate Republicans today. With everything we’ve learned about the Russian interference in the 2016 election, it’s unconscionable that the Senate majority would play these games with our democracy. Minnesota was one of 21 states that was targeted by the Russians in 2016 and of those states, we remain the only remaining state that hasn’t taken advantage of the available $6.6 million in federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) funds. At some point, Minnesotans need to start asking ourselves, why don’t the Republicans want to see these issues solved?
“Our election security should not be a controversial issue, this should be an easy layup and Senate Republicans just blew it. As we move closer and closer to 2020 with a 14-year old voter registration system, hackers and those who would interfere with our elections continue to get newer and smarter technology. Continuing to delay funding election protection just sets us up for attacks on our system like we saw from the Russians in 2016. Paul Gazelka and the Senate Republicans need to quit stalling and move forward with urgently needed upgrades to our critical infrastructure.”
