Jason Lewis Would Support Trump’s Budget That Hurts Hundreds of Thousands of Minnesotans
Proposed Trump budget makes cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
Less than 24 hours after Republican Senate candidate Jason Lewis told WCCO he did not oppose any of the Trump Administration’s proposed policies, President Trump released a budget proposal that makes cuts to critical programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Lewis would support this budget, and once again demonstrate his uncompromising partisanship, even if it means supporting policies that would hurt Minnesotans.
President Trump’s proposed budget would cut $800 billion from Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. His budget also directly undermines the Affordable Care Act and does nothing to stop his Administration’s lawsuit to repeal the entire ACA, which would eliminate protections for 790,000 Minnesotans with pre-existing conditions.
Wall Street Journal reports:
“[The White House budget] targets $2 trillion in savings from mandatory spending programs, including $130 billion from changes to Medicare prescription-drug pricing, $292 billion from safety-net cuts—such as work requirements for Medicaid and food stamps—and $70 billion from tightening eligibility access to disability benefits.”
On Sunday, Lewis was asked if there was anything President Trump has done that he does not support or endorse. Lewis responded by saying, “Well, good policy is good politics. And I agree with his policies, so why would I oppose anything?”
This isn’t the first time Lewis has shown his dedication to gutting these services. Just last month he rushed to embrace cuts to Social Security and Medicaid less than 24 hours after Trump announced plans to “look at” cuts to those programs. And in 2017, Lewis voted for the AHCA, which would gut protections for those with pre-existing conditions, make health insurance unaffordable for older Americans, and raise premiums.
Ken Martin, Chairman of the Minnesota DFL, released the following statement:
“Jason Lewis has pledged unequivocal support for Trump administration policies that will harm the people of Minnesota, like eliminating protections for people with pre-existing conditions and cutting Social Security and Medicare to the bone. It’s clear that Lewis will always place the interests of his political party ahead of the needs of Minnesotans.”
