The Latest From The DFL:
Minnesota projects $641 million surplus through June

Earlier this week, Minnesota budget officials reported a projected surplus of $641 million dollars through June, compared to estimates of a $2.4 billion shortfall predicted back in May. As a result of the latest budgetary assessment, it is now possible for the Minnesota legislature to pass a major economic relief package to alleviate financial strain on businesses struggling as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed plan from Governor Tim Walz would extend unemployment benefits for an additional 13 weeks and give low income families an immediate payment of $500.

Federal relief package still underway in Congress

On Tuesday, members of Congress outlined a bipartisan $908 billion relief package. Both Senator Klobuchar and Rep. Dean Phillips are urging Congress to act as soon as possible, however, Republican Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell has continued pushing for an inconsequential proposal of $550 billion. Two crucial unemployment programs are set to expire before the end of the year, leaving an estimated 12 million Americans without an income, therefore it is imperative for Congress to pass a substantial relief package prior to the holidays.
