Statement from DFL Chairman Ken Martin on Trump’s Anti-Immigration Executive Orders

“Today, Donald Trump will sign multiple executive orders that effectively close our borders to immigrants and refugees from the Middle East and Africa. In signing these orders, Trump is doubling down on one of his most dangerous campaign promises: to ban all Muslims from entering the country.

“By fear-mongering and moving forward with his despicable policies, Trump is slamming the door in the face of men, women and children literally running for their lives. We are in the midst of a humanitarian crisis and America, as one of the most prosperous countries on the planet, is doing well below the bare minimum to help these families who are fleeing from war zones. We can’t afford to do less, we must do more.

“America is a multicultural experiment that is successful because of immigrants. Here in Minnesota we’ve seen that first hand. We’ve seen how our communities have been made better by welcoming immigrants and refugees. We’ve seen how diversity makes us stronger, not weaker. That’s why we must lead by example and do everything in our power to stop these bans.

“The executive orders Trump is going to sign on immigration go against our basic values in this state and country. We are a nation of immigrants and what has always made America great and exceptional is that we are a beacon for people seeking freedom, liberty, and opportunity from all around the world. Trump’s actions go against the very fabric of our country’s founding and strength.

“I call on every Minnesotan to contact their representatives in the U.S. House and Senate and tell them to actively oppose these executive actions. Our lawmakers need to hear from each and every one of us that closing the doors to our country is not the answer. Together, we will let Donald Trump know that banning immigrants and refugees hurts us and further divides us. Together, we will let Trump know that immigrants and refugees belong here. Together, we will let Trump know that it will take more than bullying and fear to make us turn our backs on the world.”
